Close on the heels of the seizure of about 1.5 tonnes of adulterated tea in the city last evening, the Food Safety Department today seized nearly one-and-a-half tonnes of adulterated jaggery from two places here.
According to department sources, the seizure was made from a shop in Selvapuram and a godown in RS Puram – 900 kg and 720 kg respectively.
Sodium hydro-sulphide was used above permitted level to make the jaggery appear more attractive in colour, which was also an adulteration, they said.
The samples have been sent for test and based on the results, cases will be registered against the owners, they added.
The department seized 1.5 tonnes of adulterated tea from a shop in Chinnavedapatti on the outskirts, during the routine check yesterday. A case has been registered against the owner, they said.
