Chennai: West Bengal police is expected here on Saturday again to arrest Justice C S Karnan of Calcutta High Court after he was sentenced to six months prison by the Supreme Court in a contempt case. An earlier attempt of the police failed. The apex court ahs refused to hear his plea against the jail term.

Police sources here on Friday said that Justice Karnan is staying somewhere in the State and his whereabouts were not known.

“We got information that a police team from Kolkata is coming again tomorrow in search of Justice Karnan,” a senior police official seeking anonymity said.

But he added that it was not known whether they would approach the State police for help. “If they want our assistance we will do it again,” the official said.

Justice Karnan, who had been staying at the State Guest House at Chepauk since Tuesday last week even before the Supreme Court passed orders awarding him six months’ jail term, suddenly went missing from the next morning.

The special police team from West Bengal arrived here on last Tuesday, stayed here for several days and tried to get all possible clues about the whereabouts of Justice Karnan. They unsuccessfully even conducted searches in his native place Virudhachalam in Cuddalore district.
