Chennai: In yet another gruesome incident, Sonali, a girl student of an engineering college in Karur, died after she was beaten grievously in her college classroom by a male student who was supposedly under suspension.

“The boy, Udayakumar, came into the college, picked up a log lying inside the compound, entered her classroom and had a small argument with her. He then hit the girl on her head twice,” a police official said.

Sonali is a third year engineering student hailing from Madurai, while Udayakumar is from Paramakudi in Trichy district. According to police, the boy and the girl seemed to have been friendly for a while.

“For the past few days, the girl began avoiding Udayakumar, as he was suspended from the college. Angered by this, Udayakumar hit her in the classroom,” the police official said.

Udayakumar also attacked and injured the professor who tried to rescue Sonali.

Sonali was shifted to a hospital in Madurai, as she suffered serious head injury in the attack.

“We don’t know for sure why and how she was attacked while sitting in her classroom. We were told that a suspended student entered her classroom and hit her with a log this morning,” the relative told new channels in Madurai.

The Karur police have arrested Udayakumar.
