Lack of funds and lethargy shown by officials have stalled the road widening process near Maruthamalai Road here. The work that began in 2010 was supposed to get over by 2011.
According to K. Karthimathiyon, secretary of the Coimbatore Consumer Club, the widening of the 1.5 km road has been waiting for funds. “The State Highways Department started the work in 2010 after the administration gave the go ahead. But the work is still incomplete due to lack of funds,” he has said in a letter to the chief engineer for construction and maintenance, Chennai.
He also alleged that the officials have not shown any urgency to complete the work on time. “Out of the total cost, Rs. 55 lakh have already been remitted to the Revenue Department for land acquisition. Still an additional Rs. 4.85 crore was required by the department to acquire the required land for the project,” Kathirmathiyon said and added that he would approach the court to bring about a solution to the issue.
