Chennai: Former chief minister O Panneerselvam on Saturday declared that merger would happen soon. “You will hear good news in a day or two,” OPS told media persons on Saturday when media persons cornered him outside his residence.

After lengthy discussions failed to evolve consensus within the OPS group on Friday, three ministers were closeted with the former chief minister and his team till late into the night.

Talks are moving in a positive direction, but details are to be worked out, said a source.

As demanded by the OPS faction, the EPS group may indicate the formal ouster of jailed AIADMK general secretary from the party. Some sort of announcement is likely from the ruling faction soon, said sources close to the OPS camp.

“You will hear good news in one or two days. Merger talks are going on in positive directions,” OPS told media persons. Agreement could be reached in a day or two, he said.

Meanwhile, Dinakaran camp stepped up its activity with a meeting at his residence on Saturday to plot the next move.

Dinakaran has threatened to activate the “sleeper cells” and destabilize the party and government. His supporter Nanjil Sampath told media persons that “the merger would not be good for the party.”

When asked about BJP chief’s visit to Chennai and if that was the reason for the activity within AIADMK, he retorted, “Amit Shah is not avatar purushan. This is Tamil Nadu and not Gujarat,” to indicate that the Dinakaran factions has some surprises up its sleeve.

Dinakaran, who has called for a rally on August 23 in North Chennai for another show of strength, has to worry as his support among MLAs was dwindling. But there are reports that DMK was readying to move a no confidence motion, and then the disgruntled elements in AIADMK could up the ante, including forcing the fall of the government, sources said.

For sure, the last word on merger and its impact has not been said, yet.
