When translated Raksha Bandhan means ‘the knot of protection’. It is an ancient ritual that is observed by the Hindus to celebrate the love between brother and sister. Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on the full mood day (Shravan Poornima) of the Shravan month of the Hindu calendar.

Coimbatore city also celebrated this bond between brother and sister. For many North Indians

Raksha Bandhan was a close family affair where the sister tied the Rakhi or band on her brother’s wrist. This was followed by the sister saying a prayer for her brother’s well being. A tray with a lamp lit is rotated around the brother’s face. Tilak is applied on her brother’s forehead and the sister then feeds her brother a sweet. The brother makes a promise take care of his sister under all circumstances. The brother gives his sister a gift in cash or in kind.

Shwetha Thawani, a hostelite from a private college in the city said that she was unable to go to Bangalore this Raksha Bandan and she misses being home. She told Covai Post that she is awaiting the next weekend for all the lost fun and will have her brother come home from Pune to celebrate Rakhi. “I propose to get lots of money from him as compensation”, she added.

The Jain families of Coimbatore visited their holy temple and prayed for world peace.
