The 10th edition of Coimbatore Vizha began here on Friday.

Inaugurating the Coimbatore Day celebrations, Corporation Commissioner Dr. K. Vijayakarthikeyan said the main aim of the festival was to involve people from various communities to take the district forward.

Coimbatore was the second largest producer of recycle bags, next to Bengaluru. “There is a growing demand for the recycle bags and a large number of people are approaching the city seeking details about the bags,” he said.

Coimbatore dispatched 140 pump sets to Chennai during the floods two years ago. “There was a huge demand for motor pumps to drain out the water in Chennai. While Coimbatore sent 140 sets, other districts sent 12,” Vijayakarthikeyan said.

Shankar Vanavarayar, former Chairman of CII’s Young Indians (YI) said Coimbatore Vizha was started for the people of Coimbatore to celebrate the wonderful things in the district.

The Coimbatore Vizha will be celebrated from January 5 to 12, 2018 throughout the district.

A ‘Double Decker’ bus displaying information about the city will be operated during the festival period. There will also be food, music and film festivals, and various other events as part of celebrations.

A website, mobile application and social networking pages on Coimbatore Vizha was also launched on the occasion.
