If a petition from the Coimbatore Aam Aadmi Party cadre is to be believed, 12 schools in the district are functioning without a proper license from the district administration here.
In addition, the party cadre has also alleged that 39 schools in the district were functioning without renewing their license.
According to the petition filed by S Mohammed Rafi, coordinator of the western zone of the party, the district administration had earlier closed many schools in the district as they did not have proper licenses. However, a lack of proper checking on the part of the administration led to the illegal reopening of the closed schools.
“The sad part is that the schools have started admitting students whose future hangs on a balance if the schools are closed again,” he said.
He further added that lack of procedure followed by the schools in admitting students have led to malpractices by the school administrations.
“The district administration should first review all schools and check if their licenses are renewed. Then, it will become easy to identify schools that violate the norms and cancel their licenses,” he suggested.
Claiming that the local authorities should not give proper recognition, including fire safety precautions to schools that did not hold license, Rafi added that illegal constructions should also be checked and cleared immediately.
Party members also requested that action be taken against the students who roam in shopping malls during school hours and also against the school administration for being careless about student attendance.
