A total of 210 Congress cadres were arrested by the police when they picketed two ATM parlours in the city. Led by VMC Manoharan, Congress district secretary (Urban), over 300 Congress cadres took out a procession from the district collectorate and laid siege to the SBI ATM and placed a wreath in front of it, condemning its non-functional status.
In Singanallur similar picketing was done in front of the Central Bank of India ATM;110 Congress cadres including 14 women were held. A portrait of Prime minister Modi was torn up by the angry cadres.
Speaking to Covai Post, VM Chandrasekaran said that due to lack of contingency measures following the demonetisation move taken by the government the common man was very much affected. ATMs are locked out due to lack of cash and banks were also not able to cater to the needs of the people.
He added, “We have organised the picketing campaign to condemn the Centre which has not put in place intelligent measures to tide over this money crunch situation for the common man.”
