Women have always created wonders when they’ve taken charge – and we have many examples to prove that. Take for instance, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, who created Biocon and grew Biopharmaceuticals as an industry in India, or Indra Nooyi, who changed the future of PepsiCo and steered it to new heights.

India now has a whole group of women entrepreneurs and leaders who are growing their various industries with their brilliance and acumen. However, there are also women who have silently conquered and risen above their counterparts in their industries and have forever changed the way things work. Here are some of the underdogs of the Indian economic space.

Sairee Chahal, Founder,CEO, Sheroes
Sairee Chahal is the Founder, CEO www.sheroes.in – an online career destination for women. Formerly a journalist with an Advertising & Marketing magazine, she quickly moved on to set-up world’s first daily for mariners —newslink services dot com. She also created FlexiMoms, and aims to bring women professionals closer to businesses. She is a strong supporter of women’s rights to work and through her work tries to help more women achieve their career goals. With Sheroes.in, she engages with businesses to help them connect with female talent in form of employees, partners, customers and business owners.

Richa Kar, Founder, Zivame.in
CEO and Founder of Zivame.in, an online lingerie e-tailer, she has changed the face of lingerie shopping in India. Going beyond the taboo associated with buying lingerie, she has created a platform where anyone and everyone from anywhere in India can conveniently shop for lingerie at their heart’s desire, without having to go through the awkwardness of the process. She started from scratch, in a small office space, and has now grown the company to a $100mn valuation and made it one of the leading online lingerie selling platforms in India.

Radhika Aggarwal, Co-founder & CBO, ShopClues
Radhika Aggarwal is the Co-Founder and Chief Business Officer at ShopClues.com. She is also the first Indian woman Co-Founder to enter the prestigious echelons of the Unicorn Club. As the driving force behind its go-to-market initiatives, she has carefully nurtured the brand to make it a house-hold name in less than 5 years. Having created a level-playing field for MSMEs, ShopClues has grown over 6 lakh merchants’ businesses and brought Bharat, or the tier 2, 3 and beyond markets online. Radhika is passionate about empowering women to assume leadership roles within her organisation as well within ShopClues’ vibrant community of merchant partners.

Saroja Yeramilli, Founder, Melorra
Saroja Yeramilli founded Melorra, an online trend-based jewellery discovery and shopping portal, which set the record for the highest early stage investment in India by raising a whopping $5mn. Since then, Melorra has become the go-to jeweleery buying platform for young, urban women, looking for light-weight, unique, bold yet simple jewellery. She has created a unique space for the company and has grown brilliantly in that space.

Falguni Nayar, Founder, Nykaa.com
Founder of Nykaa.com, Falguni Nayar revolutionised make-up shopping in india. Up until recently, women would go to a Sephora or even the nearby beauty shop to shop for make-up and have to go through the time-consuming process of explaining their needs to the keeper and hope that they deliver the right shade or brand. Through Nykaa, consumers can directly look for the brand, product and shade they want and order at their convenience. Aiming to recreate the multi-brand make-up store experience online, she created the platform which now boasts all popular brands and price ranges in its catalogue. Though she had a stumbling start, she grew the company and painstakingly corrected the catalogue from consumers’ reviews.
