Kottayam: Signaling trouble to the Athirappally hydel project, former Chief Minister and present Kerala Administrative Reforms Commission chairman V S Achuthanandan has said the project cannot be implemented with the CPM-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) not giving its clearance.

He said Electricity Minister M M Mani had told the Assembly that the project can be taken up only through consensus. It is learnt that the constituents in the LDF do not favour the project. Then where is the consensus, he asked.

CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran is against the project. On the other hand former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy of the Congress said the project should be implemented after taking the opinion of all political parties.

But Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala and KPCC president MM Hassan have opposed the project.BJP State chief Kummanam Rajashekharan said both the Congress-led United Democratic Front and the LDF were misleading people on the issue.

Leaders of two fronts were openly airing their differences and support to the project. In such a situation, the government should come out with a white paper on the project.
