Thanjavur: At least 25 activists of Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) were arrested today when they attempted to besiege the head post office in Thanjavur condemning the BJP-led Central Government for not setting up the Cauvery Management Board as directed by the Supreme Court.
Led by the outfit’s Thanjavur south district unit general secretary J. Haji Sheik, the activists came in a procession, raised slogans condemning the centre’s stand on the Cauvery row and attempted to besiege the post office. They were arrested.
Haji Sheik alleged that the Centre had betrayed Tamil Nadu keeping in mind the elections for the Karnataka Assembly next year. Though the Centre accepted the Supreme Court’s September 30 order directing it to set up the Cauvery Management Board, it changed its stand and filed a review petition in the court on October 3 much to the dismay of Tamil Nadu farmers, he said.
He also condemned the NDA government for not taking any action against Karnataka for defying the Supreme Court directive to release water to Tamil Nadu.
