Thanjavur: Burglars who entered the locked house of an assistant commercial tax officer (ACTO) in Thanjavur last night looted 20 sovereigns of gold and Rs 20,000, kept in the bureau, and escaped.

Kamaraj, 57, residing at Thirumurugan Nagar, Saratha Nagar Extension on the Medical College Road in Thanjavur, along with his family, had gone to bazaar at 8 pm for Diwali shopping.

Taking advantage of this, thieves broke into the house, and escaped with the jewels, cash and a laptop. Kamaraj, who returned home late night, was shocked to find the door lock broken open and the valuables in the bureau gone.

Based on his complaint, Thanjavur Medical College police registered a case and are investigating.
