Chennai: The Madras High Court today extended the stay on the cancellation of local body elections by three more weeks.

The order was passed while hearing a petition filed by the State Election Commission, since the DMK sought time to reply to the State Election Commission’s plea.

The Court, last month, cancelled the State local body elections. The dates for the local body elections were announced on September 25 stating that the elections would be conducted on October 17 and 19, with the period of filing nominations to begin the very next day for over a week.

The Elections Commission’s (EC) notifications were unclear as to which wards had been allocated for Scheduled Castes and which wards were allotted for women contestants, the DMK said in its plea.
