The Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) would soon have a geriatric ward equipped with latest machinery.

A highly placed source at the CMCH told Covai Post that medical and non-medical staff at the hospital were undergoing training in geriatric care and management to handle senior citizens.

The block, dedicated to take care of the needs of the senior citizens, would be handled by professionals who would be able to handle senior citizens, who require medical attention.

“Those admitted to our geriatric ward will not be referred to as patients. It will be more like a home for the elderly people. Our staff is currently undergoing training in geriatric care and management. Very soon this department will be fully functional at CMCH.” Dr. Edwin Joe, Dean, CMCH said.

The geriatric care ward, a Government of India project, would be senior citizen and disabled friendly. To begin with it would be a 20-bedded ward and later upgraded depending on the needs. This ward would function all 24 hours.
