A 17-year old girl student committed suicide by consuming poison in her house, reportedly after being humiliated by a teacher in front of fellow students.

Kalaivani, doing her second year degree course in a private college in Kovaipudur returned home in Selvapuram dejected last evening from the college, police, quoting the parents of the girl, said.

The household woke up in the early hours, after hearing the screams of Kalaivani, who had consumed poison. She was immediately rushed to the Government hospital, from where she was shifted to a private hospital. However, Kalaivani died around 10 a.m. without responding to treatment, police said.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Kalaivani was humiliated by a teacher when she was unable to write answers to some questions on the board. Following this her classmates had made fun of her, police said. Parents and relatives demanded action against the teacher, as the post mortem and investigations were on. Police have recovered a suicide note reportedly written by Kalaivani.
