The newly-elected members of the All Coonoor Auto Drivers Welfare Association conducted an oath-taking ceremony today at the Coonoor main auto stand today.
More than 2500 auto-rickshaws ply the city, with 17 auto-stands all over Coonoor, and permits were issued for 800 new auto-rickshaws last year. All these 17 autorickshaw stands voted to elect their nominees during the elections that were held on October 15.
A.K. Umar was elected as president; D. Ibrahim, the treasurer; and, T. Deva, the secretary of the association. Umar promised that the association would work with sincere dedication towards the welfare of all the auto drivers in Coonoor. Ibrahim said that the association will work towards creating a trust fund to help the auto drivers during emergencies.
Deva, the newly-elected secretary has promised that the association will work to improve the standard of the auto drivers. Regular meetings will be conducted and further negotiations will be held with the Regional Transport Office for addressing the issues affecting the auto-rickshaw drivers and for improving the services.
