Thanjavur: Members belonging to the Congress party today staged a demonstration in front of the Thanjavur railway station protesting against the demonetisation of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes by the Central Government.

Led by the party’s south district president T. Krishnasamy Vandayar, the activists also raised slogans against the Centre.

Krishnasamy Vandayar alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has deceived the nation and “the government has miserably failed to handle the situation”.

“Several people have died waiting in queues. Hospitals are turning away patients. The BJP-led Government has proved that it is anti-poor, anti-farmers and anti-women. Ten days have passed by, still people are suffering and the Government has not done anything,” he alleged.

Party’s district unit treasurer Vayalur Ramanathan, advocate Anbarasn and Mahila Congress functionaries Revathi and Santha and several others participated.

A similar demonstration was organized by the party’s urban district unit in front the head post office here.

Led by the party’s urban district president, P.G. Rajendran, the demonstrators raised slogans condemning the Government.

Among others, former district president Nanji K. Varadarajan, urban district vice-presidents Kandapillai, Balakrishnan, Shahul Hameed and general secretary Satha. Venkatraman participated.
