Close on the heels of the death of a month-old elephant calf in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) camp, another calf was found dead in Thottalingi, in an area coming under MTR today.

The workers going to tea estate noticed the calf, less than one month old, lying dead some distance from a water body and informed the forest department officials.

The officials, along with veterinarian, Dr. Vijayaraghavan rushed to the spot and recovered the body. “The post mortem was conducted and the body was buried there,” Dr. Vijayaraghavan said and added that dysentery could be the cause of the death.

The viscera has been sent for examination.

An elephant calf, which was spotted in Sirumugai forest and taken to MTR camp, died a couple of days ago.
