Faecal sludge treament plant inaugurated in Coimbatore

Coimbatore, Sept 23 :A faecal sludge treatment plant was inaugurated at Periyanaickenpalayam on the outskirts, claimed to be the first in Tamil Nadu, with electronic mechanized technology.
The plant was set up at 1.50 acre of land at Resource Recovery Park, at a cost of Rs 2.48 crore, which will treat household sludge in the five town panchayats, with a population of over one lakh, Municipal Administration
Minister, S P Velumani, who inaugurated the plant Tuesday evening, said.
A total of 25,000 litres of sludge will be treated by using electro mechanic method, an official release, quoting Velumani said Wednesday.The plant was constructed under Tamil Nadu Urban Sanitation Support
Programme (TNUSSP) to improve the sanitation facilities in the region.
About 60 faecal sludge treatment plants are coming up in the state and about 40 per cent of them are at completion stage, the release said.The treated water could be used for construction and industrial activities,
landscaping and agriculture, the solid sludge can be converted into manure
after co-composting it with municipal solid waste, the release said.
