Farmers asked to store and sell turmeric

With good chance for the prices of turmeric to increase during the next year from the current Rs.9,500 per quintal, the Agro Marketing Intelligence and Business Promotion Centre of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has suggested to farmers to store and sell the produce, to get higher income.

At present, turmeric is sold at Rs.9,500 per quintal in Erode market, which is 47 per cent higher than the price of previous year during the same month and from September last onwards, price had shown an increasing trend.

Due to the recent price rise, 20 per cent of the stored turmeric was already sold in Tamil Nadu. Sowing of turmeric will be in the months of June-July and harvesting will be done
during January-March and prices will hover around Rs.9,500 to Rs.10,000 per quintal.

During the current year, area under turmeric in Tamil Nadu had increased, whereas Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Maharashtra witnessed a marginal decline.

In Tamil Nadu, turmeric is cultivated in 0.46 million hectares with 2.31 million tonnes of production in 2014-15.
