In a tragic incident, four members of a family, including a woman, who had gone to take a dip in the Amaravathi River in Dharapuram of Tirupur district, drowned to death last evening.

Sindhupriya, along with her husband Arun Joelraj from Chennai, had come to her parents’ house for Christmas holidays. After celebrating the festival, the couple, along with their relatives – Rajkumar (Sindhrupriya’s brother), and Andrews (her cousin) – went to bathe in the nearby Amaravathi River that evening.

Sindhupriya had swum some distance and was caught in the current. Her husband Joelraj went to rescue her, but he too was dragged away by the current. When Andrews and Rajkumar noticed them struggling in the water, they too jumped in and were caught in the strong water currents. All four of them died in the river.

The Fire Service and Rescue personnel retrieved the bodies. Further investigations are on.
