The city police today arrested a five-member gang for waylaying and robbing 3.85 kg of gold and five kg of silver bars, which were being taken to a jewellery shop from Peelamedu in the city, a few days ago.

A gang of six had waylaid the van carrying the staff of a jewellery store in the city, while they were taking the gold and silver bars from their factory from Bharathi Nagar to the shop on September 14 and assaulted and looted the valuables at gun point.

There were four persons, including the driver in the van, but could not retaliate as the gang, wearing helmets, threatened to shoot them, police said.

Investigations led to the arrest of one Allen, a former employee of a travel agency, running a call taxi service, who used to transport gold bars to the jewellery, police said.

Based on his confession, police arrested four – Saravanakanth, Hariharan, Raja and Benjamin, and produced them before the court. They were remanded to custody.

The stolen gold and silvers bars were recovered, police added. Police are on the lookout for another person of the gang identified as Santhosh.
