A goldsmith was relieved of 880gm gold worth Rs. 9 lakh at knife point at Onnipalayam near Periyanaikenpalayam on Monday.

According to police, Easwaran, a goldsmith by profession for the last 15 years, was on his way to Udhagamandalam to deliver 10 necklaces (all weighing 880gm) to Suraj Jewellery. (Easwaran, a resident of Telungupalayam near Perur, usually takes order from the shop and makes jewellery for them).

On July 17, police said, he took a share taxi to go to Udhagamandalam to deliver the jewellery. When the vehicle neared Onnipalayam the co-passengers threatened him at knife point to part with the jewellery. They also took away his watch and mobile phone before forcing Easwaran to get down from the car.

Based on Easwaran’s complaint, rural police have registered a case. A special team has been formed to nab the culprits. Investigations are on.
