Felling of a tree at the Hamilton Police Club, a heritage building, nevertheless dilapidated, was stopped following the intervention of the Revenue Divisional Officer, Madhuranthagi.S

The Hamilton Police Club, situated opposite to the railway station was earlier used by the cops during the British era, when they visited Coimbatore. But following the number of hotels that have sprouted in the city, this place is currently left in ruins. A group of landlords had contributed to the construction of the club in the 1920s.

This place is currently being used as a parking lot for the vehicles visiting the hotels and lodges close-by. On Thursday a group of persons were sighted axing the tree inside the premises and the public around the area alerted the RDO. The RDO Madhuranthagi told Covai Post that cutting of tree has been stalled inside the premises and they have been asked to take due permission to proceed further.

A source from the police department said that there is proposal to demolish the existing building. However there is not much clarity on what would come up in the vast stretch of the land in the heart of the city.
