Farmers near Pollachi today busted a racket involved in dumping medical waste from Kerala in a farm land.
According to police, farmers in C. Gopalapuram on the outskirts of Pollachi had complained of foul smell emanating from an eight-acre farm land belonging to one Manikandan a few months ago. However, Manikandan managed to convince them saying that he was rearing white pigs and smell could be that of it.
However, a group of farmers then noticed small pits were dug up in the farm land and decided to monitor Manikandan’s activities from last night.
To their surprise, they noticed a mini lorry entering the land around 3 a.m. and dumping some bags into the pits.
They rushed to the spot and on opening the bags, they found medical waste and parts of human body in them, police said.
Though a few persons managed to escape, one Shahul Hamid was caught and handed over to police.
Police have taken Hamid into custody. Search is on for Manikandan and some others involved in this, police added.
