Insurance firm ordered to pay Rs. 45 lakh compensation to cop’s family

The Motor Accident Case Claims Tribunal in Thanjavur today ordered the Ramanathapuram branch of a private insurance company to pay a compensation of Rs 45.20 lakh to the wife of a Special Sub Inspector (SSI) of Police who died in a mishap near Paramagudi in 2012.

According to prosecution, a 49-year-old Gopalakrishnan, resident of Arogya Nagar, EB Colony, Nanjikottai road, Thanjavur and working as an SSI at Nainarkoil police station in Ramanathapuram district was returning to the station after attending a court case in Mannargudi on December 4, 2012 in his motorbike when he was hit by a speeding lorry.

Gopalakrishnan sustained serious injuries and was hospitalised. He, however, succumbed to his injuries 55 days later.

His wife Bhagyalakshmi filed a petition before the Motor Accident Case Claims Tribunal in Thanjavur praying direction to the Sriram General Insurance Company to pay compensation subsequent to the death of her husband in road accident.

Principal Sub-Judge Poornajaya Anand, in his verdict, ordered the Ramanathapuram branch of Sriram General Insurance Company to pay a compensation of Rs 45,20,144 to Bhagyalakshmi.
