Lalithaa Kumaramangalam pf the National Commission for Women (NCW) has said that incidents of crimes and atrocities against women were on the rise and the Commission was creating awareness by providing training to the girls and women.

“Unless and until the women are treated equally and given mutual respect, there is the remote possibility of reducing the atrocities against them,” she said, while talking to the reporters on the sidelines of a function in Coimbatore.

NCW only has recommendatory powers. Despite laws to protect the interest of women in the country, the commission had to frequently pursue the police to take action against the culprits, she said.

She also remarked that the advent of the internet has helped in bringing out more and more cases of atrocities and crimes against women.
