Kottayam: A mega alliance of Opposition parties will be formed to fight fascism in the country, former Defence Minister and a top Congress leader A K Antony said.

The strength of such an alliance will be put to test during assembly elections in Gujarat in December. Congress will lead the alliance under the guidance of party President Sonia Gandhi, he said at Kochi.

There may have been set backs for such alliances. But the coalition will work with determination to rescue the country from the grips of fascist forces before next Parliament election, he said.

Fourteen parties had a meeting in New Delhi last week and discussed the matter. Congress chief Sonia Gandhi had discussed the matter with the presidents of the parties.

The parties will work to protect the rights enshrined in the constitution. The parties are planning to set up a coordination committee to concentrate on assembly elections next year.

Rallies and protests will be organised at Gujarat where election will be held in December.

Similar programmes will be held during polls in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh and Jharkhand next year.
