Over 4,000 athletes to participate in Athletic meet

National champions, Mithravarun, Nandhini, Vivek, Sibani and Samayasri, will be among the 4,000 athletes, who are expected to participate in the 29th State Level Junior Athletic Championship beginning here on October 16.

The three-day championship is for those in the age group of 14,16, 18 and 20 years and about 2,500 boys and 1,500 girls are expected to participate in the 1,233 events, with four groups each in boys and girls, Dr. L. P. Thangavelu, President, Coimbatore District Athletic Association, joint organisers with Tamil Nadu State Athletics Association, told reporters here today.

The winners, with good record will be selected for participation in the National Level Athletics Championship to be held in Ranchi from November 21, he said.

Around 450 medals and 10 trophies were at stake.

Stating that for the first time the events would be conducted under flood lights in the city, Dr. Thangavelu said that 75 referees from all over Tamil Nadu, 75 referees from the district and
125 trainee physical education teachers from Avinashilingam University and Bharathiar University would be officiating at this event.

The teams from Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT), St. Josephs Sports Academy, Royal Sports Club, United Sports Foundation, Kovai Athletic Club, Kovai Athletic Federation, Achiever Athletic Academy and Seven Star would be participating in this meet.

SDAT has taken up the renovation work of the track like painting and marking at a cost of Rs.6 lakh, he said.

The State Local Administration Minister S.P. Velumani, Mayor P. Rajkumar and President of Tamil Nadu State Athletic Association Walter Devaram, would participate in the inauguration, Dr. Thangavelu said.
