Pregnant woman’s body exhumed for investigation

The body of a seven-month pregnant woman, buried a month ago, was exhumed for examination today, following a complaint from her mother.

Sugunadevi of Ramanathapuram in the city died on October 24 evening and her family has buried the body the next day at a burial ground in Nanjundapuram, police said.

However, Hamsaveni, the mother of the deceased woman, lodged a complaint suspecting foul play in the death and sought a detailed inquiry, they said. The feotus had been removed before burying the body.

Based on an order by the district administration, the body was exhumed today in the presence of doctors from the health department, with tight police security. The available parts were removed from the body and sent for examination to Chennai and a report is expected in another four days, police said.
