Private buses that operated on routes of their choice were fined by transport police in Coimbatore.
Buses ignored predetermined routes in order to avoid traffic snarls and to get more passengers, in essence violating route permits, said police sources.
Police swung into action and conducted surprise raids following complaints.
When police checked vehicles plying on Goodshed Road behind the railway station, they seized a bus that was attempting to reach the railway station through this route instead of operating on the route from Periyanaickanpalayam Press Colony, Marakadai, Town Hall to reach the railway station.
Similarly, a bus heading for Sivananda Colony plying on route from Sungam, the Government Hospital, Townhall Oppanakaraveedhi, Uppilipalayam flyover, took a diversion at Goodshed Road aiming to reach the flyover.
Both bus operators were fined Rs2,500 each.
