Various departments of PSG College of Arts and Science came together with PSG Institute of Management to celebrate the Joy of Giving or Daan Utsav. The weeklong celebration started on October 2. As part of the celebrations, nails from various roadside trees in the city were removed. Nailing on trees is an offence; it harms the tree tissues and slowly rots the stem. Students of the Department of Psychology and Department of Social Work (PSG CAS) removed the banners and billboards that were nailed to the trees on the Trichy Road, Kalapatti, CODISSIA Road, Race Course, RS Puram, and Court Road.

Joy of teaching was celebrated by training the inmates of the Universal Peace Foundation in skills like making earrings, designer greeting cards, origami, and mehandi designs, in order to make them financially self-reliant. They were also taught Yoga and breathing exercises.

Seva Samayal was celebrated by the students of the Psychology Department (PSG CAS), and PSGIM with the inmates of Sarvajana Manavar Illam that houses orphaned and semi-orphaned students.

Gift of Literacy, a two-week campaign that ends during the Joy-of-Giving week, was also celebrated. Libraries were set up in government schools in order to make reading material available to its students. Used books, magazines, and educational VCDs/DVDS were collected for the libraries.

Also, as part of the celebrations, students from the Psychology Department (PSGCAS), and PSGIM collected discarded wastes to raise money. Magazines and newspapers were handed over to ITC, in exchange for stationery items that were gifted to the children of child care homes.

With a staunch faith in the inherent goodness and generosity of the human heart, a simple healthy lunch and breakfast was prepared by a team of students (Psychology Department, PSGCAS & PSGIM) and offered to the HoDs and faculty members of PSG CAS and PSGIM during the charity lunch and charity breakfast events.

The charity lunch and charity breakfast operated on the concept of gift economy – “Eat as you like, Pay as our heart feels,” wherein the HoDs and faculty members of PSG CAS and PSGIM, after having their breakfast and lunch, dropped any amount they wish to in a dropbox kept at the venue. The money left after deducting the amount spent on preparing the breakfast, was utilized to buy groceries for an orphanage in the city.

Apart from all these initiatives, the members of PSG CAS (Psychology Department and Social Work Department), and PSGIM community were encouraged to use the Blackle search engine. All the computers in the campus had Blackle set as the default home page during the entire week. This tiny step was adopted to collectively contribute to the power saving initiative of Google.
