Thanjavur: At least 25 students, including 15 girls, were distributed scholarships worth Rs. 4.15 lakhs in Thanjavur today with a view to celebrate the Canonisation of Mother Teresa tomorrow.

Rajya Sabha Member K. Parasuraman gave away the cheques to the beneficiaries on behalf of the Mother Teresa Foundation, a Thanjavur based non -governmental organization, during a function at the Anbu Illam on the Madhakottai Road in Thanjavur.

Parasuraman also gave away prizes and certificates to the winners of various inter-school competitions.

Among others, City Mayor Savithri Gopal, chief educational officer Thiruvalarselvi participated in the function. Earlier, A.R. Savarimuthu, chairman of Mother Teresa Foundation, welcomed the gathering.

Mother Teresa would be declared Saint by Pope Francis at the Vatican tomorrow. In 2003, the Mother was beatified by the then Pope John Paul II – the first step to gaining Sainthood.
