When protests against TASMAC outlets are growing, employees of the corporation are on a one-day hunger strike in city to highlight their issues including job security. All trade unions of TASMAC are participating in the strike.
The protestors, led by S Moorthi of CITU, want the Government to take immediate action regarding job security and safety of employees. “The government should take immediate action regarding the employment of people who worked in shops which were recently closed down”, he said adding that the workers should be made permanent and given jobs in other departments if needed.
Many shops were closed down recently due to a Supreme Court’s order against functioning of liquor outlets within 500 meters of National and State Highways.
One of the protesters said, ”The Government should offer police protection to TASMAC outlets and employees functioning in non- residential areas.” More than 50 employees are participated in the strike.
