UDHAGAMANDALAM: Television actress Nilani was arrested at Wellington on Wednesday for spreading misinformation in social media about the protest in Thoothukudi against Sterlite plant and the police firing that followed.

Nilani, wearing a police uniform, had released a video, in which she was seen condemning the police firing and terming it a pre-planned.

In a video posted on Facebook, the actress condemned the firing on the protesters and said she felt ashamed wearing the khakhi uniform and would have gone to meet the families of the victims who were killed in the firing if she was not busy with her commitment (at the spot).

Based on a complaint, police registered cases against her in Vadapalani police in Chennai under Sections 153 (wantonly giving provocative with intent to cause riot), 179 (refusing to answer public servant authorized to question), 81 (act likely to cause harm but done without criminal intent) of IPC and Section 66 D of IT Act. Police also launched a manhunt to nab Nilani.

On a specific information that she was staying in her relative’s house in Wellington, Vadapalani reached the house and took her into custody and produced before the Judicial Magistrate Soundararajan. Nilani is being taken to Chennai to be produced before Saidapet Court.
