Coimbatore District Transgender Rehabilitation and Social Awareness Union filed a complaint petition against other transgender union heads and members.

The petition filed against another group named Jamat, states that the jamat members have been threatening the transsexuals, demanding money and also beating them up. So to live a peaceful life, they sought protection and a promise from the authorities that they will take action against them.

“We were part of a transgender union called Jamat. But they started demanding money on a daily basis and threatened us for the same. We cook for our livelihood and many among us are degree holders. But they try to push us into prostitution when we say that we are unable to give the money they demand”, said A Poornitha, Sub-Head of Coimbatore District Transgender Rehabilitation and Social Awareness Union.

According to Poornitha, the the group forced them to give Rs 200 to Rs 500 daily. Unable to bear the torture they had quit but now they are being forced to rejoin.

“Poornitha, Vasugi and Sanjana were beaten up by the group on the streets in Tirupur and those on the street remained mute spectators. Even the police were not ready to file an FIR. The Jamat members attacked us in the station as well. But still the police kept quiet. Then it was advocate R Usha came to our rescue. She called the Assistant Commissioner of Police at Coimbatore and he helped us is getting back to city safely ”, said P Sanjana, member of Coimbatore District Transgender Rehabilitation and Social Awareness Union.

The complaint specifically mentions that even though there are district heads for all districts, they just mention Thiruvarur District Head Kavitha Nayak. According to Poornitha, ‘Nayak’ is the rank given to Kavitha, it is a status. And she is misusing the status.
When Covai Post spoke to the advocate, she said, “I treat them as one among us. That is the reason I decided to help them. Their condition was so pathetic when I met them and hence I decided to help them” .
