Thanjavur: Police on Friday arrested a usurer in Thanjavur for threatening a government school teacher demanding exorbitant rate of interest for the money borrowed by the latter.
Mohanraj, residing at Vadakku Suriyanpatti village near Thanjavur and working as teacher in Papanasam had reportedly borrowed Rs. 50,000 from Arivazhagan, resident of Vilar road after signing a document. Mohanraj reportedly repaid the loan amount along with interest. However, Arivazhagan did not return the document but threatened Mohanraj demanding more money.
Based on a complaint, Thanjavur taluk police registered a case and arrested Arivazhagan yesterday.
It may be noted that 45-year-old Meena, resident of Burma Colony in Thanjavur, who had borrowed Rs. 3 lakhs from Arivazhagan attempted suicide by consuming poison a few weeks ago as the usurer attempted to illegally grab her house worth Rs. 40 lakhs.
Based on her complaint, Thanjavur taluk police registered a case but Arivazhagan managed to get anticipatory bail.
