Thanjavur:Officials and staff of various departments took out a rally in Thanjavur today to create an awareness among the voters on the need to exercise their franchise and fulfill their democratic duty during the November 19 election for the Thanjavur Assembly constituency.

Corporation commissioner M. Varadaraj flagged off the rally, which started from near the railway junction. The rally, organised by Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEET), culminated at Aringar Anna Centenary Hall after passing through the bazaar and Anna Salai.

The participants carried placards with catchy phrases that appealed to the voters to vote and ensure 100 per cent polling. Among others, SVEET nodal officer and Saraswati Mahal Library administrative officer A Poongothai, tahsildar D. Poongodi took part in the rally.

According to Poongothai, hand bills would be distributed in the next two days to the public at textile shops in the bazaar. “Besides, street plays will be be held at important places where people converge in large numbers, and cultural programmes will be organized in association with South Zone Cultural Centre (SZCC),” she said.
