The 2016 Assembly Election has come as a blessing in disguise for Seeranaickenpalayam Ward 20. Residents believe that the AIADMK Councillor G. Jayanthi is pushing many civic amenities to completion before the elections. Ms. Jayanthi has been a Councillor for 10 years and lives in that area, which has nearly 30 streets inhabited by 30,000 people.

The condition of the roads and streets is testimony to the fact that the Councillor had taken steps to get the works completed. Like in many other Wards, the main problem area is the lack of a proper drainage system. Works are on at Radhakrishnan Street, Nethaji Road, Thilagar Street, and Anna Nagar.

As many as four public toilets have been constructed on Sugarcane Street, MGR Street, Gandhi Nagar, Anna Nagar, and one is yet to be completed on Kakinarai Street.

The only Children’s Park is being misused by teenagers and men to gamble and a liquor den. Since children do not use it regularly it has been lying in a state of disuse without maintenance.

An existing marriage hall in Ponnusamy Nagar that needs renovation is lying as such for lack of attention. Residents complain that the Councillor has not taken any steps to repair it for the last six years. In the meanwhile a new marriage hall is getting constructed on Bharathiar Street.

The construction work has caused damage to the drainage leading to sewage spilling onto the roads. Another point of contention is that there is only one graveyard in Seeranaickenpalayam, which is not maintained well.

During the previous period, the area belonged to Ward 53 and it is been four years now since the area has changed to Ward 20, but every street still bears the board with Ward 53 on it.

Though the residents do not seem too happy with the Councillor’s performance, they seemed to have elected her for two terms.

Ms. Jayanthi says that the works were getting delayed because the funds were not reaching on time. She believes that she has done a lot of good for the people and is hopeful that she will get another term.
