University Grant Commission (UGC) has ordered that the universities can now send the report on Sexual Harassment cases for a one year period till March 31. The report will be compiled and sent to the Government of India.
According to UGC Regulations 2015, the universities under the commission will have to send annual report for the period April 1, 2017 to March 31, 2018.
WHAT SHOULD THE UGC REPORT CONTAIN?
Number of cases of sexual harassment reported to the committee
Number of cases which were disposed off
Number of cases which were left pending for more than 90 days
Details of the action taken in response to a reported case of sexual harassment
Number of workshops on awareness programmes against sexual harassment conducted on campus in the stated period
COMMITTEE COMPULSION TO DEAL WITH GENDER BASED VIOLENCE
In 2015, UGC had made it compulsory for colleges and universities to constitute an Internal Complaint Committee (ICC) and a Special Cell in their institutions to deal with gender based violence and conduct gender sensitization programme.
LODGING SEXUAL HARASSMENT COMPLAINTS ON THE WEBSITE
In 2015, the commission had issued a circular directing the universities and institutes to develop a page on their website to help the sexually harassed students and teachers to lodge their complaints
UGC also asked them to place a complaint on this score with the registrar or principal or the heads of the concerned institutes
