After a severe earthquake jolted Indonesia, more than 500 hikers and their guides are left stranded on an active volcano on Lombok, reports AsiaOne.

The slopes of Mount Rinjani which is crisscrossed is popular among tourists.

Most of the hikers are said to be from France, Thailand, the Netherlands and Malaysia. One of the hiker who is stranded on the mountain, Nupa Wan posted the plight of hikers on Facebook seeking help.

Since then, helicopters and rescue teams have been deployed to search for the hikers on Mount Rinjani. It is reported that at least 16 people were killed and several properties were destroyed in the powerful earthquake.

The quake also dislodged tonnes of rock and mud on Mt Rinjani blocking the way out for the stranded hikers, reports AsiaOne. The authorities at the Rinjani National Park Sudiyono said that the hiking trails on the mountain have been closed in the fear of further landslides in the wake of earthquake.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes as it lies on the Ring of Fire which is the line of frequent quakes and volcanic eruptions that virtually centres the entire Pacific rim. And more than half of the world’s active volcanoes above sea level are part of the ring, reports IANS.
