Sports is big; we can’t get enough of our cricket, football, tennis and badminton doses, even though in our country, we aren’t possibly paying the same attention (monetarily and otherwise) to all sports but worldwide it isn’t quite the same scenario. No wonder, anything related to sports is equally big, including sports medicines. It was estimated that the global sports medicines market will reach USD 9,655.6 million by 2023 at a CAGR of 8.9% during the forecast period.

The market is divided on the basis of products; joint reconstructive and repair products, support and recovery products and accessories and consumables. Approximately 40% of market share is attributed to the joint reconstructive and repair products. Many students are branching out to sports medicine as a discipline, and this is a recent phenomenon, given the money and the increasing demand that it is witnessing. “Sports medicine is that branch of medicine that deals with the physical health and curing or of sports related injuries. Sports has become a huge part of our daily lives, and most of us are aware of the health benefits because of it. And because it isn’t really restricted to young people, we see all kinds of sports related injuries, which is driving sports medicine market,” says Indranil T, a sports fanatic.

The numbers are suggestive of the demand of the discipline. According to US centers for diseases control, around 10 % of kids and teen participating in the sports suffer from minor or major type of injury. “ We keep hearing of our favourite batsman or bowler being rested because of injury. Sania Mirza once spoke about how injury can be a huge mental block for a sportsperson. And it is because of the specialised care the sportsmen and women bounce back. We need good sports medicine specialists to compete on an international level. It is a prerequisite but sadly, most sportsmen in India are complaining about the lack of it. So clearly, even though the world over, they are big, we are still struggling to get some good specialists for our players ,” adds Indranil.

“Sports Medicine is usually confused with orthopedic specialty and considered to be only for elite athletes. Musculoskeletal injuries can happen to athletes, weekend warriors and even general population. This specialty is a blend of injury management, rehabilitation, injury prevention and performance enhancement. The treatment comprises of both conservative and surgical management depending of the extent and severity of injury. It focuses on a complete sports specific and graded rehabilitation and early return to sports for an athlete. The wide horizon of sports medicine also includes sports nutrition, biomechanics of athlete and particular sports, and sports psychology,” says Dr. Sumiran Passey, Sports Medicine Doctor, AktivHealth – Advanced Rehabilitation Clinics. He further elucidates, “Injuries can happen because of extrinsic and intrinsic factors, which include the biomechanical imbalances, physiological disorders, age, gender, sports gear, training surface, shoes and training regime. Common injuries with sports involving overhead activates are shoulder instability, rotator cuff tendinopathy. Those indulging into racket sports and golf, can suffer from pain in elbow due to golfers elbow or tennis elbow, acute lower back pain due to lack of core stability. Some may even complain to lower leg pain and ankle sprains due to high agility movements required in such sports. Untrained runners and marathon participants complain of shin pain, commonly known as shin splints. This is a bone stress due to excessive stress on tibial bone usually due to sudden change of training intensities and surface. Treatment requires rest along with an individualized progressive rehabilitation.”

So, the two-cents advice to all you sporty people, “do undergo a pre-participation screening before indulging into any sports. It helps in preventing injuries and avoid any unforeseen medical event.”
