Chennai : Alstom India, the manufacturing centre of metro trains, has announced to double its capacity at its plant at Sri City in Andhra Pradesh that is located about 50 km from Chennai.

The company has bagged orders for metro trains from Montreal Metro and Mumbai Metro, besides the Chennai metro.

A top company official said that Chennai Metro wanted 10 trains.

“We will be doubling our capacity by setting up a new 22 cars per month. We are also studying the feasibility for rolling out trains made with aluminium,” Alain Spohr, Managing Director for India and South Asia told a news conference.

Flagging off 22 trains for Sydney Metro, the company official said the Montreal Metro and Mumbai Metro orders will be executed from next year. The orders are for 500 cars of metro trains. At present, the company can manufacture 240 cars per annum.

As the company received more orders, it has become imperative for it to double its capacity.
