Real life imitates reel life in RK Nagar bypoll; Action Hero Vishal triumphs after a setback

Real life imitated reel life when state election commission office presented the venue for emotions, drama and action in TN politics with the principal characters – film actor Vishal Krishna and his supporters taken into custody for protesting the rejection of his nomination papers for the December 21 RK Nagar assembly bye poll. The EC had rejected his papers on technical grounds.

But after a formal protest by the actor, the election commission officials reversed their decision and accepted the candidature of Vishal, much to the joy of his supporters.

The actor himself tweeted after the EC accepted his nomination papers – “After much struggle my nomination for the RK Nagar election is finally accepted. Truth always triumphs.”

During the course of the day, a purported conversation between Vishal and one his supporters who proposed his candidature was circulated on social media. In this In the conversation, Vishal’s supporter who was one of those who proposed Vishal’s candidature, alleged that someone from E Madhusudhanan’s team had forced him to retract his support to the actor. He alleged that he was made to say that it was not his signature on the nomination papers.

AIADMK sources rejected these allegations and dismissed them with contempt.

According to state election office sources, the nomination papers of Vishal were rejected as the names of two of the persons supporting him were wrongly mentioned. “There were inconsistencies with regard to the addresses of the people who proposed him,” EC sources said.

Election commission officials also rejected the nomination papers of late chief minister J Jayalalithaa’s nice J Deepa for leaving several columns blank.

Vishal and his supporters held a protest at Tiruvottiyur main road in RK Nagar, following which they were detained at Tondiarpet police station for some time. Vishal was however allowed to make a representation to the returning officer of the bye poll with his grievance.

Acording to Election Commission officials, the nomination papers filed by actor Vishal had inconsistencies with regard to the addresses of the people who proposed him.

Among the nomination papers accepted by the EC are the papers filed by candidates belonging AIADMK (E.Madhusudhanan), DMK (N.Marudhu Ganesh), BJP (K.Nagarajan) and over 50 independents.

In all, 145 people filed nomination papers out of which 59 were rejected. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is December 7. The RK Nagar seat fell vacant following the death of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on December 5 last year.
