On account of Shivarathri the popular Mayana Kollai festival was celebrated symbolising the annual raid on the dead at Chokkampudur burial ground. In olden days, it had some of the faithful chewing on the bones and flesh of a corpse or two. The midnight Pooja involved the priest dancing around a fierce Goddess on the burial ground, with a human bone in his mouth.
