OnePlus 6, the much-anticipated smartphone made its entry to India on Thursday at an event that saw much fanfare and had a build up with people waiting for an upgrade to the OnePlus 5T. The company that initially kicked off with ‘flagship killer’ tag and the one that develops ‘affordable flagships’ for all has delivered yet again.

The pricing of the OnePlus 6 has been in-line with what the company philosophy has been around its smartphones. Following the recent trends, the OnePlus 6 brings glass design and much needed under the hood upgrades. The display gets notch which was confirmed by the company months back. This time around OnePlus has been marketing ‘The Speed you need’ tagline for its OnePlus 6 which resonates the power of Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 under the chassis.

The Chinese company has also given the Indian market an exclusive edition that won’t be available in any markets except China. The OnePlus 6 Marvel Avengers Limited Edition will be available in India soon after the regular variant.

But is the OnePlus 6 overall a decent upgrade to the OnePlus 5T? Well, only time will tell and we will reserve that verdict for our in-depth review. We spent some time with the new OnePlus 6 at the India launch event and below are our first impressions.

OnePlus 6 design

The OnePlus 6 gets several cosmetic changes including glass present on both the sides. For a OnePlus fan, the OnePlus 6 definitely looks fresh and gives you a premium feel.

The display notch, however, is something that now looks familiar with a lot of brands finally jumping to release phones with notched displays. This also means that the OnePlus 6 joins the league of iPhone X, Huawei P20 Pro, Vivo V9, Oppo F7, and more.

OnePlus 6, much like the OnePlus 5T, sports rounded corners but gets a layer of curved glass that makes it even easier to grip. This year, OnePlus has used Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on both the front and back to give it a premium build.

The OnePlus 6 has been launched in three different colours – Mirror Black variant which is coated with a mirror sheen and offers a slight feel of ceramic build; Midnight Black offers a clean matte look, and lastly, Silk White which looks best out of three.

With glass design, OnePlus 6 definitely gains a bit weight at 177 grams and feels a tad heavier than the OnePlus 5T which weighed 162 grams.

In terms of design, the OnePlus 6 gets decent overhaul at the back. The dual camera setup is vertical with the oval shaped fingerprint scanner sitting right below the dual rear cameras. The OnePlus logo is placed around the middle at the back while ‘Designed by OnePlus’ can be seen at the bottom.

You get bottom firing speakers and the company has added water-resistant feature which makes the deal even sweater.

Overall, the OnePlus 6 looks a good upgrade from the OnePlus 5T. However, the glass design also makes the phone more slippery.

OnePlus 6 display

With OnePlus 6, the company is finally falling in-line with the notch design and it isn’t something bad. The minimal bezels combined with display notch looks great. At first look, the OnePlus 6 definitely looked to shed some weight from corners and side.

The 6.28-inch Optic AMOLED display with 83.8 per cent screen-to-body ratio might look less on paper compared to the likes of other phones but in reality, looks good.

The 1080×2280 pixels screen resolution comes with 19:9 aspect ratio. It is bright and, in our opinion, the best display we have seen on a OnePlus device. The display notch makes sure that the company’s biggest display on a smartphone looks stunning. Users get more screen space for video consumption.

To make sure users get a wide variety of display options, OnePlus 6 offers Adaptive Mode, Reading Mode, Night Mode, and Lift Up Display.
OnePlus 6 cameras
The smartphone may have received a lot of improvements internally but on paper, the camera department looks identical to its predecessor. It comes with 16-megapixel primary sensor with f/1.7 aperture gyro EIS and OIS accompanied by 20-megapixel secondary sensor with PDAF and f/1.7 aperture. There’s a dual LED flash. At the front, the phone packs a 16-megapixel camera.

When compared to the OnePlus 5T, there are not many changes in camera department but OnePlus 6 definitely brings upgrades like OIS and Super Slow-motion support. The company has added 4K resolution video support at 30/60 fps. In Super Slow-motion, OnePlus 6 can record 1080p videos at 240 fps and 720p videos at 480 fps.

We will reserve our verdict on the camera of the OnePlus 6 when we review the device.

OnePlus 6 specifications, software

Running Android 8.1 Oreo based OxygenOS, the OnePlus 6 comes with its latest iteration of software which feels light and closer to stock Android experience. The company has focused on gestures and on-screen navigation support with Alert Slider, something that was mission from earlier versions.

The OnePlus 6 comes with Face Unlock feature and it is really quick. In fact, we can assure you that this one is way faster than what you saw on the OnePlus 5T.

It is powered by the top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor clocked at 2.8GHz coupled with 6 GB / 8 GB LPDDR4X of RAM and comes in 64GB and 128GB. The OnePlus 6 Marvel Avengers Limited Edition is launching with 256GB which differentiates itself from the crowd. The 3300mAh non-removable battery comes with Dash charge support.

OnePlus 6: Initial thoughts

OnePlus 6 feels like a much-needed upgrade to the company’s flagship range but at the same it retains a lot of goodness of the OnePlus 5T. New to play are the glass design and display notch. Another addition is the water-resistance which makes the overall package even better. The phone retains the 3.5mm audio jack which will be seen as a nice gesture by a lot of enthusiasts.

OnePlus 6 price in India starts at Rs. 34,999 for the 6GB RAM and 64GB storage model while the 8GB RAM and 128GB storage model comes at Rs. 39,999. The India-exclusive (and China) OnePlus 6 Marvel Avengers Limited Edition will be retailing at Rs. 44,999 via Amazon India.

The Limited Edition will be going on sale from May 29 while the regular version will go on sale from May 22.
We will reserve our verdict on the OnePlus 6 till our in-depth review. Stay tuned to TimesNownews.com for review of the OnePlus 6.
