With Samsung’s Unpacked 2018 event just around the corner, there is still plenty of time to squeeze in every last bit of information about the upcoming Galaxy S9 that will leave little to the imagination. After renders, specs and availability having being leaked already, we pretty much know everything there is to know about Samsung’s next flagship. Now, folks over at XDA Developers have found that Samsung will be showing off the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ at the event in augmented reality.

This new piece of information wasn’t easy to find, but a Reddit user reportedly downloaded the Unpacked 2018 app on the Google Play Store and tore it down to discover a feature hidden within that will allow users at the event to visualise the Galaxy S9 in AR. Users will have to tap their phone on the back or front of their event badge to view Galaxy S9s back and front, respectively. Augmented reality will let users see 3D models of the Galaxy S9 on their hand and they will also be able to switch between colours and view the phone from all angles.

Unearthing this information was quite a process quite a process for the Reddit user as the 3D models aren’t actually present within the app but are available on Samsung’s website. The Redditor then made some modifications to the Unpacked 2018 app and used a proxy to download the models, which means general users are not going to be able to see the Galaxy S9 in AR after downloading the Unpacked 2018 app just yet.

XDA Developers got hold of some images of the Galaxy S9 in AR and that is pretty much the only thing left to see now before Samsung unveils its flagship. The images confirm everything we know about the Galaxy S9 as far as the design is concerned. The Galaxy S9 will look similar to the Galaxy S8 with an edge-to-edge screen and an 18.5:9 aspect ratio. Samsung will not be changing things too much on the exterior, except that the fingerprint sensor will be placed below the rear camera and the Galaxy S9+ getting a dual rear camera setup. Most of the changes will be under-the-hood as the flagships are expected to come with upgraded cameras and will be powered by the latest Qualcomm and Exynos chipsets, among other things.

As per leaked specs this week, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will be powered by either the Snapdragon 845 or Exynos 9810 chips depending on the market. The former will be offered with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage while the latter will come with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The smaller Galaxy S9 will sport a 5.8-inch WQHD+ (2960×1440) Super AMOLED display while the Galaxy S9+ will sport a similar resolution with a 6.2-inch screen. The flagships will be unveiled a day ahead of MWC 2018 on February 25 where the attendees will be able to view the devices in AR.
