Delhi Police’s Crime Branch on Thursday arrested three more people, including a woman, in connection with the CBSE class 10 mathematics question paper leak.

The education board had announced on March 28 that nearly 16 lakh class 10 students would soon have to re-appear for its mathematics examination and over 3 lakh class 12 students for the economics exam following reports of a leak of question papers on WhatsApp. The move sparked widespread outrage with children and their parents criticising the CBSE.

Alok Kumar, joint commissioner of Police Delhi (crime), said the mastermind of the question paper leaks is Rakesh Kumar, a PGT teacher of DAV Centenary Public School Una in Himachal Pradesh, who was nabbed on April 6.

“The fresh arrests of three accused became possible through leads given by Rakesh during sustained interrogation. Two of the accused are manager Sheru Ram (35) and cashier Om Prakash (58) of Union Bank of India’s Una branch. The third accused (a woman) is a relative of Kumar, who is responsible for circulating both question papers on WhatsApp which latter went viral,” the JCP said.

According to the official, Rakesh planned and executed the leaks of the class 10 mathematics and class 12 economics question papers. He has been booked under sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code at the crime branch police station, Shakarpur, Delhi.

“Being a centre superintendent, Rakesh along with two of his employees, Amit and Ashok, went on March 23 to collect question papers from the Union Bank of India, and he not only stole class 12 question papers, which he confessed to earlier, but also stole class 10 mathematics paper from the strongroom on that day,” Kumar said.

“In this case, the bank manager and cashier violated the guidelines of the CBSE by giving free access to Rakesh to enter the strongroom alone. Their criminal negligence has been established and so, they have also been arrested in this case,” he added.
