Peek before you sit: that will be from now the mantra of James Hooper, who was stunned to discover a python in his toilet bowl. A resident of Virginia Beach in the US, Hooper initially thought one of his housemates was playing a prank on him when he found the snake.

“The snake was moving around, its tongue doing a slithering thing,” he was quoted as saying by Washington Post. “We realized it was real.” Though he wanted to grab it, Hooper gave up the idea as one of his roommates feared that it was a poisonous copperhead. Instead he clicked a photo of the snake before using a fishing pole strung with a noose to remove it.

While Hooper thought the snake travelled through the sewer system to his toilet, Rebecca Franklin, Virginia Beach’s animal control supervisor, said that was unlikely. But there is still no explanation as how the snake ended up in the toilet.

The female snake had travelled miles from the home from which it had escaped and was probably resting in the water, Franklin said. She identified it as a pastel piebald python. After Hooper’s photos were shared on social media, the owner reclaimed the animal, which isn’t venomous, the report said.

“They get bigger than what size she is,” Franklin said.
